Sexual Addiction
Sexual Addiction can sometimes be known as hyper sexuality, sexual compulsivity or out of control sexual behavior. The hallmark of struggling with sexual addiction is engaging in behaviors that are creating problems for you in your home, work or other major areas of your life and causing you pain, shame and discomfort. We believe that this type of sexual acting out is generally the tip of the iceberg for the true problems underneath. It is our job to assist you in learning what underlies the sexual behavior and help you on the road to having a healthy sexual life. Each client is an individual and therefore treatment cannot be one size fits all. Some methodologies of treatment include Schema Focused therapy- which helps a client understand how early experiences created filters for how they translate their world and helped to set up coping mechanisms that were maybe once adaptive to feeling safe and secure but now have become maladaptive. For more information about schema therapy see glossary. Other areas of treatment include Acceptance and Commitment therapy- which is a common and well researched modality for managing addictions and trauma. This type of treatment is values based and incorporates mindfulness to allow a client to learn to emotionally regulate. For more information see glossary. Another possible focus of treatment is utilizing other trauma based methodologies or more cognitive behavioral focus. Most often clients need to incorporate many different methods into their treatment in order to fully heal and move towards peace. The main goals of treatment often include: learning healthy intimacy, accountability, empathy, shame reduction, healthy sexuality, trauma resolution and emotional intelligence.

Paraphilias
Paraphilias are commonly misunderstood by many and poor treatment or diagnosis of these can create harm. Paraphilias are considered “non normative” sexual behaviors and range from pedophilia, masochistic behaviors, exhibitionism, fetishism and many other examples. Some people are disturbed by their paraphilia disorders and have internal pain and discomfort. Other clients have acted out their paraphilias on others causing harm. Both of these would be considered to have a paraphilic disorder. Some clients want to learn how to incorporate fetish or other nondisordered paraphilias into a healthy sexuality. Learning how to decipher when a paraphilia is disruptive or disordered is often the first goal of treatment. Treatment goals can then be acclimated to the individual or couple as needed based upon the first stage of treatment. Goals of treatment often include assessment, ruling in (or out) other disorders such as sexual addiction, shame reduction, healthy sexuality, trauma resolution (as needed) and potentially risk management.
Individual sessions for paraphilias are available

Sexual Offending
Sexual offending is a broad term for a heterogenius population and is often misleading. Those who have offended sexually against another person would be considered sexual offenders for treatment purposes. However, many clients seek treatment prior to legal system involvement as they know their behaviors are not congruent with their values. It can be difficult to ask for help for these behaviors due to stigma and shame but truly opening up begins the healing process. Most who struggle in this area know that by keeping it a secret they will cause themselves, and possibly, others harm. Other clients seek treatment after legal involvement which often is the impetus to hope and healing. Work with offenders is often similar to that of sexual addiction or paraphilias with heightened emphasis on relapse prevention, empathy and accountability as well as shame reduction. Client first need a safe place to discuss their issues and learn about themselves. Treatment plans are individualized and incorporate many different methodologies including the containment model. The Containment model is the choice treatment model for working with those who have sexually offended and views the client as a whole, not just their offences. For more information about the containment model, see the glossary.
