Partners and Spouses
Working with spouses and partners is first and foremost based on their individual journey. While there are many prevailing theories on working with spouses (e.g. codependency, or trauma models), it is most important that spouses and partners have a voice and each story is heard. Treatment is based around the needs of the individual first and, as needed, the couple. Many partners are lost as to next steps and need a space to process, find safety and time to heal before feeling pressured into making decisions. Many partners need guidance on setting boundaries, relearning their own needs and work on healthy interdependency as well as individualization. Work with spouses is often focused first on empowerment therapy as well as psychoeducation around the disease model and shame reduction.
Individual sessions for spouses are available as well as a group on Thursday evenings.
Couples
Working with couples is an important aspect of treatment for both individuals at different points in their journeys. Couples therapy can help improve emotional intimacy, communication and healthy sexuality. Each person is considered a part of the couple and there is no identified patient. Couples therapy is available by appointment. Please note that couples sessions are only available to those who are not being seen individually (except in cases where conjoint sessions are needed for disclosure or other limited needs).
Parents
Having a child with problematic sexual behaviors can be confusing and gut wrenching. Does my child have a problem or is it healthy age appropriate sexual exploration? How do I help my adult child make better choices? My child was arrested, what do I do now? How do I know if I am enabling them or too distancing? Did I cause this? Were they abused? These are just some of the questions that parents may ask themselves when faced with sexual acting out. Working with parents to educate and empower them to answer these questions is a powerful form of therapy. Each family system is unique and has their own history to explore. Families may need to grow and adapt to challenging cyber focused times but feel lost in web. Parents may need to work on the trauma and bereavement of having a child lost to addiction or offending behaviors before they can move forward in the healing process. Sessions for parents and families are available.
